Sue & Paul's Alaska Travel Adventure
Day 12, Wasilla - Copper Center (5/25) (Map)
We visited the Alaska Transportation Museum in Wasilla which had lots of old cars and trucks, couple trains, lots of tractors, snow machines, planes, and boats.  We were soon on the road heading north to Glennallen (we found out later that 5 inches of snow had been reported) and Copper Center Lodge.  We started going up and down hills, then mostly up.  The rain started and we both agreed that this was the worst weather we had seen.  Then we started to see cars coming from the other direction with varying amounts of snow on their hoods and grills.  The snow started, first light and melting as soon as it hit the ground.  It started to accumulate and about the time that we got to the level of two inches of snow on the road, a snow plow pulled out and we followed that guy for about thirty miles.  He was only going about 25 mph but that was a good speed for this Florida driver.  He pulled over and the snow was replaced with rain, and the road was clear. We arrived at Copper Center and stayed at a historic roadhouse called the Copper Center Lodge. The building was built in 1932 and has been renovated. We ate dinner in their restaurant which was delicious.  Paul had a pasta with reindeer sausage, and Sue ate a vegetable plate that they made up for her. We were anxious about our flight in a small plane to Kennicott in the morning considering the day's weather.
